"Leathercraft is in my blood — it's not just a business, it's a lifelong dedication."

— Hanspeter Winklmayr, Founder & Master Craftsman

What to expect when you arrive

A factory outlet at Winklmayr is not a clearance sale in a car park. It is a working atelier — a live, active workshop where bags are being cut, stitched, and finished on the very day you visit. The showroom sits alongside the workshop floor, which means your shopping experience is accompanied by the quiet industry of craftspeople doing what they do every day. Here is what awaits you:

  • Outlet pricing — direct from the maker

Because you are buying directly from the workshop with no middleman, retail markups, or distributor margin, prices at the outlet are lower than anywhere else you will find Winklmayr. The same lifetime warranty applies to every piece purchased in-store.

  • The full collection — all in one place

The entire Winklmayr range is available in-store: women's handbags, shoulder bags, crossbody bags, evening bags, wallets, purses and belts; men's satchels, business bags and wallets; and the full accessories range including keyrings, cosmetic pouches and glass cases — all in ostrich and crocodile leather.

  • A working atelier — craft visible in real time

Our 20 skilled artisans work in the same building. On most visits you will hear the workshop in operation and may be able to see pieces in various stages of production. It is a rare thing — to buy a luxury item in the very room where it was made.

  • Touch the leather — no screen between you and the product

Online shopping cannot tell you how ostrich quill leather feels under your fingertips, or how a crocodile belly piece catches the light differently from every angle. At the outlet, you can hold every piece, open every clasp, and feel the weight of every bag before you decide.

  • Bespoke & custom orders — your brief, our craft

The outlet is the best place to discuss a bespoke commission — a specific colour, a custom size, a piece designed entirely to your brief. You are in the workshop. The conversation about what is possible is far richer here than it is over email.

  • Corporate gifting enquiries welcomed

If you are looking to source Winklmayr pieces for corporate gifting, incentive awards, or staff recognition, the outlet is the ideal place to discuss quantities, customisation, and lead times directly with the team.

The Winklmayr leatherworking tradition traces back to the Jakob Kammerer workshop in 1691 — over 330 years of unbroken craft heritage that Hanspeter Winklmayr carried from Austria to South Africa and into the Strydom Park atelier. Every artisan is trained personally by Hanspeter. Every piece that leaves the workshop carries that lineage. When you visit the outlet, you are not walking into a shop. You are walking into the continuation of something that began three centuries ago.

"This is not a retail store. It is a living workshop where a 300-year craft tradition continues every single day."

Five tips for getting the most from your visit

Before you go

Make the most of your trip to Strydom Park

1

Come on a weekday. The outlet is open Tuesday to Friday only. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday give you the fullest hours (8:00 am – 4:30 pm). Friday closes at 1:00 pm, so plan accordingly.

2

Browse the collection online first. Knowing which pieces catch your eye before you arrive means you can ask the team targeted questions — and leaves room for the pieces you discover in person that you did not expect to love.

3

Bring your brief if you want bespoke. If you have a custom commission in mind — a specific colour, size, or design — jot down your thoughts before you arrive. The team can advise you much more effectively when they understand what you are trying to achieve.

4

Allow at least an hour. The outlet is not a quick browse. Between exploring the collection, handling pieces, and possibly watching the workshop in action, you will want time to do it properly.

5

Ask questions — no question is too small. The team at the outlet includes people who have made many of the pieces on display. Ask about the leather, the construction, the care, the heritage. That knowledge is part of what you are buying.

"Come and see where it all begins."
