Behind the Scenes
Where the Magic Actually Happens
Ever wondered what goes on behind those gorgeous ostrich and crocodile bags before they land in your hands? Spoiler: it involves a lot of skill, a very meticulous Austrian in a sleeveless white coat, and — believe it or not — the occasional trip to Italy for some rather special lime-green fabric.
Welcome to the Winklmayr atelier in Randburg, Johannesburg. It's not a gleaming factory floor you'd see in a glossy television advert. It's better than that. It's a working workshop where every single bag begins as a flat panel of exotic leather and ends up as something you'll be carrying to your grandchildren's weddings.
Step Inside — The Man Behind It All
At the centre of it all is HP (Hanspeter Winklmayr), founder and head craftsman. Picture him stationed at his vantage point in his signature sleeveless white uniform, presiding over the workshop like a conductor in front of an orchestra — except instead of a baton, he's holding a piece of crocodile skin up to the light and squinting at it with the intensity of a jeweller inspecting a rare gemstone.
HP didn't stumble into leather by accident. He was the youngest Masters' degree graduate in his year at the Vienna School of Fashion, and leathercraft has been his family's calling since at least 1691 — over 10 generations of Winklmayrs working with leather before him. When a man has that much heritage running through his fingers, you take his quality standards rather seriously.
From Hide to Handbag — How It Actually Works
Every Winklmayr piece starts with the leather itself. HP personally selects the hides — and if the hardware or lining materials aren't up to standard locally, he sources them internationally. There's no cutting corners, quite literally.
- 1Leather selection. Premium ostrich and crocodile hides are hand-picked by HP himself. Each skin is inspected for texture, grain consistency, and quality — because no two exotic skins are alike, and that's rather the point.
- 2Design & engineering. HP personally designs and engineers every item before a single cut is made. The templates are precise; the measurements, obsessive. This is where Austrian precision meets Johannesburg soul.
- 3Cutting & measuring. Skilled artisans — many trained by HP over decades — get to work at their stations, cutting and measuring with the kind of care you'd give a very expensive haircut.
- 4Sewing & assembly. The stitching at Winklmayr is not merely functional; it's architectural. Every seam is inspected; every thread end is treated as if it matters. (It does.)
- 5Hardware & finishing. Clasps, rings, and fittings are sourced wherever they meet HP's standards — no compromise on the details. Each piece then receives its signature lime-green Italian Sateen lining, embroidered with the Winklmayr logo.
- 6Quality check. HP casts his eye over the finished piece one final time. If it passes his gaze, it earns the right to be called a Winklmayr. If it doesn't — well, back it goes.
That Lime-Green Lining — Yes, It's from Italy
Open a Winklmayr bag and you'll notice something immediately: that distinctive lime-green Sateen lining with the Winklmayr logo. It's sourced from Italy, and it's a deliberate signature — a little secret that only the person carrying the bag (and the people they choose to show) ever gets to see. It's the leathercraft equivalent of a good suit's hidden pocket: understated, intentional, and rather lovely.
The People Who Make It All Happen
A workshop is only as good as the hands inside it. Winklmayr employs a dedicated team of 20 artisans, some of whom have been with the brand for decades — a rarity in any industry, and a quiet testament to the atmosphere HP has cultivated. These aren't conveyor-belt operatives; they're craftspeople who understand that what they're making will outlast most things in the buyer's wardrobe.
And it doesn't stop there. Some of the brand's signature dust bags — the protective pouches that come with each piece — are sewn by elderly women from Alexandra township. It's a small detail, but it says a great deal about the kind of brand Winklmayr is: one that builds community into the product itself.
The Next Chapter: A New Generation Steps In
HP is thinking about the future, too. He's been training his nephew Christopher Winklmayr — who, at just 23, arrived armed with a freshly earned Master's Degree in Leathercraft from Austria — to carry the legacy forward. Christopher is being personally mentored by HP to uphold the brand's standards. One imagines the lessons are thorough, and that no stitch passes without commentary.
The family has been doing this since 1691. It would appear they intend to carry on for a good while yet.
What You're Really Buying
Every Winklmayr piece comes with a lifetime warranty — not a marketing gimmick, but a genuine promise from a man whose family has staked its reputation on durability for over three centuries. When HP puts his name on something, he means it to last.
So next time you run your hand over the grain of your Winklmayr bag or clip that perfectly weighted clasp shut, spare a thought for what happened in that Randburg workshop before it reached you: the early mornings, the squinting at hides, the meticulous stitching, and one man in a sleeveless white coat making sure every single detail is exactly right.
It's not just a bag. It's a rather extraordinary amount of care, compressed into something beautiful enough to carry every day.
